Being A Mom

I got this a couple of weeks ago from a friend of mine. It is so true. I was reminded of it when another friend of mine, a new mom, was having some problems with the new stresses of being a mom. Being a mom is the greatest thing in the world. There is no greater feeling then when you see that little one and they give you a big hug and kiss because they are so excited to see you. It will always amaze me how fast and much you can love a little being and the man that gave it to you! Enjoy! I did!

Being A Mom
We are sitting at lunch one day when my daughter casually mentions that she and her husband are thinking of "starting a family."
"We're taking a survey," she says half-joking. "Do you think I should have a baby?"
"It will change your life," I say, carefully keeping my tone neutral.
"I know," she says, "no more sleeping in on weekends, no more spontaneous vacations."
But that is not what I meant at all. I look at my daughter, trying to decide what to tell her. I want her to know what she will never learn in childbirth classes.
I want to tell her that the physical wounds of child bearing will heal, but becoming a mother will leave her with an emotional wound so raw that she will forever be vulnerable.
I consider warning her that she will never again read a newspaper without asking, "What if that had been MY child?" That every plane crash, every house fire will haunt her. That when she sees pictures of starving children, she will wonder if anything could be worse than watching your child die.
I look at her carefully manicured nails and stylish suit and think that no matter how sophisticated she is, becoming a mother will reduce her to the primitive level of a bear protecting her cub. That an urgent call of "Mom!" will cause her to drop a souffl or her best crystal without a moments hesitation.
I feel that I should warn her that no matter how many years she has invested in her career, she will be professionally derailed by motherhood.
She might arrange for childcare, but one day she will be going into an important business meeting and she will think of her baby's sweet smell. She will have to use every ounce of discipline to keep from running home, just to make sure her baby is all right.
I want my daughter to know that every day decisions will no longer be routine. That a five year old boy's desire to go to the men's room rather than the women's at McDonald's will become a major dilemma. That right there, in the midst of clattering trays and screaming children, issues of independence and gender identity will be weighed against the prospect that a child molester may be lurking in that restroom.
However decisive she may be at the office, she will second-guess herself constantly as a mother.
Looking at my attractive daughter, I want to assure her that eventually she will shed the pounds of pregnancy, but she will never feel the same about herself.
That her life, now so important, will be of less value to her once she has a child. That she would give herself up in a moment to save her offspring, but will also begin to hope for more years, not to accomplish her own dreams, but to watch her child accomplish theirs. I want her to know that a cesarean scar or shiny stretch marks will become badges of honor. My daughter's relationship with her husband will change, but not in the way she thinks.
I wish she could understand how much more you can love a man who is careful to powder the baby or who never hesitates to play with his child. I think she should know that she will fall in love with him again for reasons she would now find very unromantic.
I wish my daughter could sense the bond she will feel with women throughout history who have tried to stop war, prejudice and drunk driving.
I want to describe to my daughter the exhilaration of seeing your child learn to ride a bike. I want to capture for her the belly laugh of a baby who is touching the soft fur of a dog or cat for the first time. I want her to taste the joy that is so real it actually hurts.
My daughter's quizzical look makes me realize that tears have formed in my eyes. "You'll never regret it," I finally say. Then I reached across the table, squeezed my daughter's hand and offered a silent prayer for her, and for me, and for all the mere mortal women who stumble their way into this most wonderful of callings.
Please share this with a Mom that you know or all of your girlfriends who may someday be Moms. May you always have in your arms the one who is in your heart.

Slacker?? I don't think so

Yes I am the blogger slacker!!! I could give you the usual excuses of being REALLY busy at home...and at work. I have been traveling and trying to get ready for Christmas, while also having a 2nd birthday party for my little guy...but it really doesn't justify my slackerness. Sorry, and many apologies!!!

As I LOVE Christmas...probably more then most people, I will not complain about the weekend of power shopping and wrapping, an afternoon spent baking, nights and lunch hours picking up "a few things I forgot", or even the hours I have spent and will spend on my computer finishing up projects I have just started for Christmas presents (yes, a slacker in another area). As I look back at the last month and realize how busy I have been I just have to say I am glad!! I wouldn't trade it for the world. I want my son to have GREAT memories of Christmas. I also want him to know that his birthday and Christmas aren't one in the same (birthdays are my second favorite time).

So I will continue to make things special for him at Christmas, even if that means a little less sleep at night or a few other things slipping. One thing (and there are many) I have learned since becoming a mom, especially a mom that works fulltime, is that you have to do what is going to keep you sane. And if things fall off you plate, you have to except the fact that you aren't a supper hero and you CAN'T get everything done. In the grand scheme of things, that laundry WILL get done, even if it isn't tonight (or this week...sorry honey), and those Christmas cards will get sent, who cares if it isn't the first week after Thanksgiving.

Besides Christmas is about new beginnings, and maybe next year it will go more smoothly, maybe it won't. But I just pray that I continue to have the patience to do things as I can, not stress about the ones I can't and that my husband has the patience to deal with me while I get them done. Because I want my son to be as excited about Christmas as I am and some day have memories to look back on and smile; like I do of the days that all of my grandparents and great grandparents where around to celebrate with and when I believed in Santa (I like to think I still believe in Santa).

And for that reason I am going to take a deep breath when I go into the mall today and just enjoy the season, it comes and goes so fast, there is no time to be cranky about crowds!

ps. I will try to do better in the future :)

A Cowboys Fan?

Never thought I would ever cheer for a Dallas Cowboy, but I did the other night, and it paid off. I am a HUGE Dancing with the Stars fan (and a lot of other cheesy reality shows) and I was so excited to see Emmitt and Cheryl win last night! This season I have been pleasantly surprised by how likeable this Dallas Cowboy is. First Jerry Rice, who I also had memories of beating the Pack but you who you just had to love because of his smile won me over last season, and now Emmitt Smith, a Cowboy no less!

Growing up 30 miles from the football shrine that is Lambeau Field, you can't help but have "I hate the Dallas Cowboys" run through your blood. I think we recited that right after the 10 Commandments in grade school. I remember when the Packers were first making their comeback in the mid to early 90's and they would get so close, and then lose to the Cowboys, thanks to Emit and his gang.

But now it is different. Dancing with the Stars shows you people/stars whom are in front of the public regularly, taken out of their element and put in an environment where they are not comfortable. It is apparent every season that the majority of the contestants are not comfortable expressing themselves as dancers. But then as the season goes on you can see them emerge as competitive dancers.

Emmitt is one of those guys. He shows you that you can embrace something that isn't your strong suit and look graceful and have some fun doing it. I think that is even more impressive for a professional athlete. Many of these athletes are always told how good they are and can't handle it if they aren't the best one. (I don't know, T.O. seems to come to mind). I truly think the reason Emmitt won was because he always looked like he was having fun, yet he was confident.

He also made you see that it wasn't ALL that he was doing. He has a wife and a family in a different state that are more important than dancing. Mario may have been the better dancer, and possibly even Joey. But do we watch Dancing with the Stars to judge the technique? I have know idea what should be the difference from a Samba to a Ramba. We watch it, just like any other reality t.v. to try to relate with the people on it and for entertainment.

So who cares how the judges judged? Who cares that Mario might be a better technical dancer? What matters is who made you smile the most and gave you the most entertainment while watching it. And it was apparent by Mario's response when he lost (sore loser, I guess they didn't teach him how to loose on Saved by the Bell), that Emmitt was the bigger man and he deserved the trophy.

...this doesn't mean that I am ever going to cheer for the Cowboys!

To vote or not to vote

As I stood shoulder to shoulder with my fellow Village of Oregon voters all in our little plastic voting desks, I encountered a few items that I debated how I was going to vote. As I stood there, knowing that many people were staring at my back, I wondered which arrow I should complete or should I leave it blank. It is my right as a citizen of the United States to vote but it is also my right to not vote. That didn't really cross my mind until I was standing in the voting "booth".

So in the few seconds that I had to make a decision, I pondered whether it was better to make an unsure, or in some instances and uninformed, vote or to leave it blank. What I did, I will probably never reveal (I don't typically even tell my husband how I vote), but I think it is something that should be discussed a little more. Maybe some of the money used on the annoying adds and MULTIPLE political calls/messages, could be used to inform the public better of what exactly the ballot looks like and what questions and elections are on it.

This is probably something that is out on SOME website, but I don't remember ANY of the people running telling me where it is. I just wish I was a little more informed on some of the things I was voting on, the exact wording of the questions that were to be asked and the implications of my vote or no vote!

And for the record, I am not a fan of the plastic voting desks. I remember as a kid my mom bringing me with her and going into an actual booth, with a curtain and some privacy while you choose which political figure you want to make decisions on your childs education, how much of your hard earned money was going to thier salary and organiztions, your grandparents healthcare and social security, and many other aspects of your daily life!

Hunter is still a little too young, but he will be going with me to the next election. I think it is important for kids to see how the process works and I was happy to see some kids at the polls today!

My Little Elmo

Trick-or-treat! Oh how I used to love Halloween when I was a kid. We would get all bundled up in our snowsuits and try to fit our costumes on over and go trick-or-treating. Then we would break the rules and go to Grandma and Grandpa's house after the time was up. I still remember how my cousin Troy and I would feel like we could get arrested for trick-or-treating after the "allowed time". Funny what you remember.

Being a mom that works full time, there is always a lot of guilt that you can't do things for your kids that 'stay at home moms' can do. And one thing I have promised myself I will always do for my kids is make them a Halloween costume (provided that they want one). I know how to sew, I love Halloween and I thought this is one thing special I can give my kids.

So this year, considering Hunter's OBSESSION with Elmo I thought an Elmo costume would be perfect. So I bought the fabric, and the pattern and I was off, off to procrastinate that is. Like any other sewing project I have taken on, I buy everything real early and then it sits until the last possible minute when I have to get everything done. But I got the costume done in time...even with haven't to seam rip the legs after I sewed them shut (did I mention I don't follow directions real well, a good prerec for sewing).

I got Hunter into his costume (kicking and screaming), got him outside in the wagon and then he started to cry. Which in turn meant that I needed to carry him. I proceeded to carry him around the block as my nieces and nephews trick-or-treated, all the while crying "home momma, home." I took him home, two houses worth of candy in toe, my brother and his family left and then he perked up.

I then stuck him in the stroller (sometimes restraints are good) and we went to his sitters. He was in a good mood then and we were able to go to some neighbors, so the night wasn't a total loss. I am pretty sure the costume was enjoyed. I am just glad I didn't spend a ton of time on it. Maybe next year, when candy means more, he will enjoy trick-or-treating a little more.

Happy Belated Halloween!!!

Crappy Job

Another big night for my little man...it was poopy time on the potty. Now this should be a huge accomplishment in a little guy's life; yet I can't stop thinking about how disgusting it is to clean. At this point I am really glad that I didn't do cloth diapers. It is bad enough to dump out a little pitcher of poop and pee but to do it daily...pretty sure I wouldn't be able to handle it.

I also can't figure out at what point do you offer privacy? As he was grunting on the potty I felt strange sitting there in front of him. But he did want me to continue reading The Night Before Christmas. Hard line to draw and somewhat funny to think of.

Now after some success with the potty, I am still dreading the actual act of potty training. I don't know if I am not ready to accept the fact that my little boy is growing up, if I am not looking forward to the time that he fails (face it no kids get it the first time they where undies...even my perfect child :) ), or if I am just not looking forward to the messy clean up?

I guess it is another step on the "motherhood" trail...stay tuned, it may be a bumpy ride.

Beautiful Wedding Bells

Saturday was my 'little' cousin's wedding. It was kind of a bittersweet occasion with his dad being in the hospital and all. But there was good news on Friday when I arrived at the salon for my FABULOUS pedicure (I would highly recommend the AHA pedicure at ANIU Salon in Middleton), my cousin was on the phone when I got there with his sister and thier dad had woken up and talked that morning!! He didn't realize yet at that time that he would be missing the wedding but at least we had something to celebrate (on top of the wedding).

Rehersal was a little tough, my aunt came with my cousin and her family. She was a real trouper and a rock that I don't think I could have been. Of course as soon as I saw her I broke down, but that was the purpose of rehersal. I got to talk to her on the ride from rehersal to dinner, and I felt better about things and got a small glimps into what they had been living through in the last week. Judie, you truely are an inspiration for your actions this week.

I say my 'little' cousin because I have used to always think that until he started at UWP when I was still there. I am very close with my cousin's in that family, so I think of them more like sibblings then cousins. This is yet another occasion that he made me feel old...but I will forgive him, it was a wonderful time and I wish them all the happiness in the world.

Unfortunately it rained (and snowed) the day of the wedding (which moved the 'outdoor ceremony' inside) but it was still very beautiful! The wedding was held at the House on the Rock resort in Spring Green, and the hotel was wonderful! We had such a great time celebrating this new marriage. I may be a sap but I love weddings. I got to see friends from college I haven't seen in a long time and hang out with my family.

I thought I would post a few pictures. Enjoy!

30 and Friday the Thirteenth

I turned 30 on Friday and due to the events that encaptured the weekend, it is no surprise that it was Friday the 13th. Having turned 13 on Friday the 13th I wasn't too worried or superstitious of the things that would happen to me on my 30th which was also on Friday the 13th, but I guess I should have been. I should have been warned when I cam down with the flu on Thursday, but I was feeling better by the time I woke up on Friday morning.

It was the first time I can remember when I didn't bring a birthday treat to work. I couldn't handle bringing treats when I didn't know if I would be able to eat them. But the day went well, my sister-in-law took me out for lunch, and my brother and his family came over for dinner. But when I got home I was talking with my sister-in-law that lives with us when the phone rang. It was my mother-in-law, Josh's grandma had passed away.

"Oh my God," was the only thing I could say. Josh's grandma had been living in a nursing home for some time and we have had many near misses with illnesses and various ailments, but it just didn't seem real. She had had 2/3rds of her lung removed due to Lung Cancer about 5 years ago, and was giving 6-12 months to live. So she obviously had been living on borrowed time. And she has had MANY bouts with pneumonia, and she had decided she no longer wanted to go to the hospital. If it was her time to go, she was fine with that, she wanted to stay at the home. It is strange to me that I was so shocked by the fact that she was gone, and I still am. She made it through so many times, I just assumed that this would be one of those times. But she is gone, and I am happy for her that it was on her terms, and I know she is in a better place. I am sure she is looking down on all of us now, at least when she has time between baking for Josh's grandpa and getting her new garden started :)

The next slap in the face came when we were eating dinner. My mom called to tell me my Uncle was in ICU with an infection which apparently had gone septic. His blood pressure was really low and they weren't sure of the prognosis. My uncle's son, my cousin is to get married this weekend, and they didn't know if he would be able to make it. As the weekend progressed he wasn't getting much better and the possibility of him not making the wedding was looking more like a probability. He is still in ICU and the Dr's think things are getting better but it is very slow going. My heart aches for him and the family. My aunt is torn between her son's wedding and her husband in the hospital. I am hoping and praying for the best and hope that there is good news before the wedding. Please keep them in your prayers.

So as you can see it was fitting that my 30th birthday was on Friday the 13th. I can also say that the evening ended on a good note. My aunt (my godmother) who I don't get to see much called later in the evening to wish me a happy birthday. It was a nice surprise and it really lifted my very droopy spirits :) So Thank You Joanne!

On another positive note, Hunter appears to be very excited about the potty. After going a couple times this weekend, he asked to go last night when we got back from McDonalds. My little boy is growing up right before my eyes! I can' t believe it!

Here's to hoping there is better news to come!!

WI FI - Gotta Love it!

As I sit here creating a post I have to say that the world has changed A LOT since I was a kid. When I was a kid we would probably be sitting around the living room watching T.V. my dad and I may be playing cribbage or kings in the corner. But in 2006, I am sitting on the couch updating my blog using wireless access (and yes it is mine I'm not stealing it!), my sister-in-law is blogging on the rocking chair next to me and my husband is sitting at our desk top also blogging - at least that is what he tells me he is doing. That makes three of us using the internet at the same exact time and NONE of us has to wait for the screen to refresh after 30 seconds! It sure is great but it does make me wonder what this does to the "family unit".

Granted for us this isn't a normal picture and our son is not quite 2 and is fast asleep in bed. But think about how common this is for families with teenagers. I would see this as a common occurrence...oh wait another piece of technology to the forefront. My sister-in-law's cell just rang and now she is texting someone too! So many means of communication yet are we truely communicating?

My sister-in-law (AKA traveling chica) has a really good post today (or yesterday) about emailing being the chickenshit way of communication. Then at the same time my cousin (AKA Tadych's) had a posting about the use of Ipods. Are all of these forms of "communication" making us become a society that can't communicate? I read a great article a while back called "A Nation of Wimps" (it is posted on the Tadych's link) which talked about how kids don't need to make a decision for themselves, they don't need to have any problem solving skills because they can, call, text or email mom and dad and ask what to do at any time. I just learned last weekend that you can now order pizza over the internet too. Another instance where you don't need any personal communication.

Is there a point when we are too connected? I would say yes. Do we all fall into that trap? Yes. For example I have a personal cell phone, a work cell phone and access to my network and email from work at home. I try hard to balance work and home all the time. Being a professional and being a mom is a hard balance. I can see how some "power hungry" people can easily get wrapped up in always being connected. Yet I have to say as a working mom there are also a lot of pluses to being able to connect at all times. When I do have extra work that has to be done, I can still pick up Hunter at normal times and then finish my work after he goes to bed, never disrupting his routine or our time together.

I guess the moral is that as long as there are checks and balances and you have good communication with your spouse (because I am a firm believer that your relationship is one of the most important things if not the most important thing for your children) being connected can be a very good thing. That and flexible schedules have changed the world for working moms in a very good way.

PS. as I was spell checking this post the funny thing is that this "technology" isn't up with the lingo because Blog, Blogging, Texting and Emailing all showed up as unknown words.

Potty Time!!!

It was a big night in our house!!! Hunter went potty on the potty for the first time!!!! YEAH!!! Now did he realize that he did it? Probably not...but he was sure excited when I told him. Right now Hunter is really into sitting on the potty because his big cousin Riley does. But typically sitting on the potty consists of me reading about 10 books. But you have to start somewhere. Last night while reading Clifford...again...he started moving the "splash guard" and looked down in the potty...which he doesn't typically do so I took a look...sure enough...there was potty in there!!! Good thing I got the Ernie Is Too Big For Diapers book...must have worked.

On a sad note that just reminded me once again how big my baby is getting :( But I am excited and like I tell new moms...sure my baby is getting big, but each stage is sooo much fun so it is all worth it!

Guess it is time to go buy some potty toys!!! I realize he may not go again for 6 months but it doesn't hurt to be prepared!!

Spam Sucks!!

If you tried to publish a comment on my blog recently you noticed that it changed. A week ago I started getting spam posted to my blog, so I changed it so you had to log in to publish a comment. Then I realized that you needed to have a Blogger acount to publish. I think I changed it now so you can post a comment, but I am the only one who can publish. I hope this works. I will keep an eye on it and change it again if needed!

Happy Thursday!!!

Sometimes Doctors Know What They Are Talking About

Well we are finally going to do it...after many doctor visits for Hunter while he was little and our nurse reminding us that it is a good idea to take the infant/child CPR refresher course, Josh and I are signing up and taking it. Why you ask? Well we had a little scare the other night, Hunter was crying so hard he stopped breathing. (I think there may have been a moment in there that I stopped breathing too). We saw the whole gammet from his lips turning blue and him possibly passing out. He was back to and crying by the time the ambulance came. But it sure makes you realize how fast things can change.

To make a long story short, and because I don't really want to rehash it again, we went to the hospital and he had lots of tests run, and we saw his doctor yesterday and apparently this is fairly common. Some kids do it as a tempertantrum, but I don't think that was what Hunter's was. He had been sick all weekend and really lathargic that day. I think he was probably a little dehydrated too. So when he started crying it was a reflex and he just kind of forgot what to do. All of his tests came back great and they don't think there is anything to be worried about...but that isn't going to make me stop kissing, hugging and checking on him while he sleeps. :)

By the time we left the ER he was up and running around, he was singing the alphabet (or the first three letters and IIIIIII). And he was really excited to go to 'Donalds! So I felt much better! But I have to say I thank my God every minute that nothing happened to him! And I pray that he never does it again! Once again I am amazed at how much I could love one little guy! As mothers told me before I had Hunter, you can't understand the immediate connection you have and how much you can love someone until you have your own child. And once again that was proven to me!

So if you have any little ones, be sure to give them an extra kiss good night, they are precious and they deserve it!

Ode to Joey

She really is a pretty kitty isn't she? As promised I will tell the story of how my kitty went from sweet, friendly and loving to possibly possessed by the devil. This tale starts 5 years ago on a very hot 4th of July weekend in LaFarge WI...

Josh and I, then engaged (that is important because of my ability to get my way through pouting...doesn't work as good once married), went to LaFarge to visit over the 4th (because the "bad kid" ran to AZ for the summer). One of the many farm cats had had a litter of kittens in May. Typically the farm cats aren't all that friendly, and me, not being a cat person, didn't really care a whole lot about the new litters. Besides that, typically they don't stick around the farm very long (why I am not sure, Josh's mom feeds them...well!). But the neighbor girls had actually been playing with this litter so they were friendly. There where 4 I believe, my little white sweetie (which we thought looked more like one of Josh's lab rats), an orange and white one, a tabby and a black and tabby one (I think). I spent much of the weekend playing with them, and needless to say I talked Josh into getting one during our drive back to Evansville.

At the time we lived in an apartment in Evansville, which happened to say "No Pets" on the lease, but a girl next door had 2, so we thought we were fine. So a week later I went up to LaFarge by myself and picked up my little white rat...when we got her she was ALL white, very little hint of color. Then came the hard part of naming her. Josh and I were laying around playing with her trying to come up with a name (she was named Vanilla on the farm, but I wasn't a fan). I suggested Zoey...and Josh said, "yeah, that's great let's call her JOEY, for Josephine on Dawson's Creek"...and he thinks I am the deaf one???

So Josephine it was! She was so much fun, she only weighed about 3.5 pounds, she couldn't get up to our bed so she clawed her way up. We were getting married that fall, so we took her along to Shawano to meet Muffin (the actual first cat I fell in love with), then to Manitowoc, then to LaFarge on our wedding shower junket. She traveled really well in the truck, we just put her on a pillow between us and she slept the whole way!

Then there was that great time in LaFarge when Josh and I were sitting on the couch watching T.V. and we heard a commotion in the kitchen and Joey came prancing in with a mouse...she was so proud...but she didn't kill it and it got away...lucky me :)

In November we got married and Josh's mom and dad said that they would keep Joey and get her spayed and declawed while we were gone on our honeymoon. She already had vet files up there so it would be fine. Well she got there and she only weighed 4 lbs so they only spayed her, and because we weren't there we couldn't say anything different. She was at a small vet and they vet had closed before Josh's mom could get there so the vet put her in a cage, in the garage, in the end of November. One thing about animals, especially small animals, is that when they are put under they need to be kept warm when they come out because their body temperature drops.

When Josh's mom got there to pick her up she was beside herself and when Josh's mom got her out of the cage she bit her. But it seemed like not much harm was done, she seemed to bounce back to her normal self after a couple of weeks.

In February we bought a new house. Considering that our house was only 3 years old and had new carpeting and hard wood, I was paranoid about her claws, so we had her declawed the week before we moved in. When I opened the door to the vet to get her declawed, she was once again beside herself. She started growling, spitting and hissing. Ever since then, she has hissed at everyone but Josh and I.

I don't know if it was getting her put down twice, the trauma of moving right after she was declawed, or if it was inevitable??? I guess I will never know, but I do know that it will all be done at once if I ever have another cat!!! The funny thing is she is so good with Josh and I, and she is actually really good with Hunter too. She is starting to tolerate Josh's sister, who is living with us.

At night she crawls under the covers with Josh and I, and she purrs like no other kitty...she loves her blankets and she loves being outside. But she gets EXTREMELY uptight if anyone else is around. She has mellowed some since Hunter has come around and she doesn't get all the attention she used to, but she sure isn't friendly.

It has been fun to see Josh become a softy to her...almost immediately. He is very defensive of her. It appears that her eyes are crossed a bit (although she could have some Siamese in her)...but don't mention it to Josh, he gets very offended.

My cousin lived with us for two summers and he and Joey HATED eachother. Joey would go in his room, while he wasn't there, and hiss at his stuff! Then there was the Christmas she broke the angels arm from my nativity scene. It was things like this that she received the nickname Little Lucifer, and Spawn of Satan.

When people come to the house she doesn't leave the room, she will rub up against your legs...Luring you in to pet her...but then when you reach down she will bat at your hand and hiss at you. I like to think she is just picky (or bipolar). I have always called her 'episodes' her Napolean Complex. She only weighs about 6 lbs and I am sure she thinks she needs make up for her size in some way...being mean is her outlet. But when people see her with Josh and I they are amazed...she is like a lap kitty.

She may be strange, bipolar, possessed or just female, but I still love her. But I have to say I have learned in a hurry that cats have WAY more of an attitude then dogs!

Thankful for my Husband

I went to another bachelorette party this weekend for my cousin's fiance'. Eventhough a good time was had by all...I am VERY greatful that I am no longer in that scene and I have a loving husband to go home to. As the night progressed and I have to say that all of us "old, married, moms" kept up well with the young, singles, I began pondering what did I really like about the bar scene. Granted it was a bachelorette party so the pe*is straws and toys were out in force...but what about a straw gives men the invitation to offer very inappropriate actions? And why does it make the nicest guy look as sleazy as the old guy that tells you the same thing? Could drunk guys be a little more degrading to women?

I don't intend to dwell on the sleaze balls, just comment on them. We did actually meet some nice guys during the night who were just out for a good time and not looking to scam on women. (obviously the kind of guys we would prefer to talk with). Although I did have one guy tell me that I didn't look older the 24, which I initially took as a compliment. But now hind sight, yes, it is a compliment, but would I want to be 24 again? When I was 24 I was just graduating from College, trying to find a job, car and a place to live. I wasn't engaged, obviously didn't have my son, was fairly uncertain of my future, how I would make my student loan payments, insurance, rent and a carpament. I was fairly bored because I didn't have homework to do. I guess in the grand scheme of things, no, I don't want to be 24 again. I like being responsible, a wife, a mom, settled down and stable.

I realize there are a lot of people who don't start thinking about stability until they are close to 40, but that isn't me. I am thankful for the things I have, for the things have done in my past, and that I lived through that portion of my life. I think the independent, carefree portion of my life in college and right after has helped me to appreciate the things I have now. I wouldn't change those years, but I will leave them in my past.

It is kind of weird for me to think that is probably my last bachelorette party (except when Mandy gets married), and I went out in style :) But I guess that it just shows that every stage in our life provides a new level of enjoyment.

Wisconsinites

I have received this email many times in many forms. And it brightens my day every time I see it, so I thought I would post it and add a little commentary.

YOU GREW UP IN WISCONSIN IF:

You know how to polka , but never tried it sober. In the words of my brother Derek at my cousin Tracy's wedding during the Beer Barrel Polka "I don't know how to do this so let's just jump around and kick our legs."
You know what knee-high by the Fourth of July means. This was a really big deal in 'Towoc...there were years the corn was first planted right before the 4th of July...my husband thinks it should be 'thigh-high by the 4th of July'.
You know it is traditional for the bride and groom to go bar hopping between the reception and wedding dance. Yeah Chewy's!!!!
You know the difference between "Green" and "Red" farm machinery, and would fight with your friends on the playground over which was better! I have married into a 'green family'
You buy Christmas presents at Fleet Farm. Toyland is great!!! Can't wait until it opens this year!!
You spent more on beer & liquor than you did on food at your wedding. 5 Barrels isn't that much is it??
You hear someone use the word "oof-dah" and you don't break into uncontrollable laughter. ach vat!
You or someone you know was a "Dairy Princess" at the county fair. How about the Queen of the Race track for a cousin?? Can you beat that??
You know that "combine" is a noun. Once again...green family!
You let your older siblings talk you into putting your tongue on a steel post in the middle of winter. Can't say I have done this...but had some kids in Gradeschool do it.
You think Lutheran and Catholic are THE major religions. What parish do you belong to?
You know that "creek" rhymes with "pick". Aren't we going to Silver 'Crick' park for sledding and grad pictures??
Football schedules, hunting season and harvest are all taken into consideration before wedding dates are set. The many common responses to our wedding date..."you are getting married November 16? Isn't that the opening of hunting??"
A Friday night date is getting a six-pack and taking your girlfriend shining for deer.
Saturday you go to your local bowling alley. Or hanging out at the fire.
There was at least one kid in your class who had to help milk cows in the morning... phew! I thought they were sooo cool! But hopefully their mom didn't hang their laundry out on the line :)
You have driven your car on the lake. Not really possible on Lake Michigan....still hasn't frozen over!
You can make sense of "upnort" and "batree". Why don't you comeere once? Why don't you come by here? We'll have a hot tamale and a couple two tree beers. Then we can get a drink in the bubbler, but don't you budge in line!
Every wedding dance you have ever been to has the hokey pokey and the chicken dance. Sorry, couldn't do that one at my wedding!
Your definition of a small town is one that only has one bar. Is there such a thing? You must have missed the one in the church (catholic) basement!
The local gas station sells live bait. Where else would you get it when the grocery store is closed!
At least twice a year some part of your home doubles as a meat processing plant. Once again...can't really relate...they shoot deer when they go hunting??
You think that the start of deer season is a national holiday. Please see Wedding comment....
Pop is the only name for soda. Much debated in our house...Hunter will be the winning vote...the first one he says wins!!!

A day to remember? Or not Forget?

Obviously, weighing on all of our minds today, is where were you 5 years ago...mine too! Which then reminds me of the saying that came out of that terrible day...Never forget. I like that those words were chosen and not a day to remember. To me a day to remember means memories. And to me memories have a positive connotation. To never forget means that something substantial has happened that shouldn't be forgotten. Notice how "A day that will live in infamy" is remembered for Pearl Harbor...another terrible day in US history? It is obvious that we all have memories of those terrible days if we have lived through them, but it is more then memories that are important. It is important to remember how we felt when those things were happening to us; how those events changed the direction of our lives or how they effected our actions and reactions and also to remember those people who died that day and those who are serving in the various services to protect us right now.

It is like therapy to hear where people were that day, what they were doing when they heard the news and their initial reaction. It is amazing how many people didn't think much of it when the first tower was hit, but I bet that would not be the reaction if that was to happen tomorrow. My personal experience was one of disbelief and ignorance.

I happened to be in Carlisle PA that week for work. I flew out of Madison on Monday, September 10th and picked up my rental car from Hertz. Our conference had just started Tuesday morning, and we were at the "Welcome" presentation by the president of the company when his secretary interrupted and said that one of the World Trade Center towers was struck by a commercial jet. Being that I was at a conference with utility people, on the east coast, some people excused themselves from the conference to check in with employers and responders. The "Welcome" then concluded and they had set up some TVs for us outside to see what was happening. At this time the second tower was hit, and shortly after the Pentagon, and the plane in PA. At this time MANY people excused themselves to not only call employers but family members and friends that may have been in the area. Many people not only had to call but many needed to leave either to report to work on the cleanup or as first responders.

My thoughts at the time; well I didn't know much about New York and if you asked me September 10, 2001 what the World Trade Center was, I don't know if I could have given you an intelligent answer. I am not very geographically or historically savvy, so I had no idea the magnitude of what was happening...until I saw people jumping from the buildings, and the plane went down in PA. Then it began to hit home, hard. Now I was a little freaked out, not only did a plane go down in the same STATE as me, which wasn't real far away, but I was also located about 30 miles from Three Mile Island, the largest nuclear facility in the US. That was PLENTY close for me. And I had to get back to WI SOMEHOW!!!

At home, Josh knew I was in PA, but not exactly sure where. My mom and dad thought I was going to PA the NEXT week, so they didn't think anything of it until Diana and my cousin Tracy called my dad to find out where in PA I was. My dad then in turn called my mom, who called my office, knowing that I keep message up to date (and it said that I left on the 10th). So she breathed a sigh of relief. I talked to Josh and my dad later that afternoon. Josh was noticeably shook which I think helped me, for what reason I am not sure. Of course when I heard my dad's voice, I had instant tears...Dad's do that!

The conference went on as planned. Realizing that I had to drive back, and luckily I had a Hertz car and I could drive it to wherever I needed, I wouldn't let myself watch much coverage of the rescue/recovery coverage. Advantica did a wonderful job keeping us occupied. We went to Hersey on Wednesday and it was so surreal, everyone we saw it was like we were best friends not strangers. Everyone sharing stories of why they were there and what they had done the day before. I drove back to WI with a guy, Brian Hayse, I met at the conference from Holland Michigan. I then drove the remainder by myself. I think that was the fastest 18 hour drive I ever had!!!

I got home and Josh wasn't home from school yet, I walked into the apartment and bawled. I was so happy to be home and I couldn't contain myself anymore. Josh came home from work and we were very happy to see eachother. We went out for dinner and took the rental car back on Saturday morning. It really was a week I won't forget.

Good out of bad??? The famous saying that good comes out of every bad event came true for Josh and I. I think the separation during a time like this really helped both of us realize how important the other was to us. The much debated conversation of marriage was settled when 11 days later Josh proposed.

9/11 will never be forgotten in my mind.

Football in the Air

Well it is here. Football starts tonight...which means Josh has the 3rd annual Chicken Fun Night to kick off the season right with some friends. I just love this time of the year and I think football starting just solidifies the start of fall! I have been fighting the urge to run home and dig out all of my Halloween/fall decorations. Yet it is hard to do because it is still 80 degrees during the day.

Fall also brings indoor volleyball. I had my first women's league match Tuesday night and we won all three! Fairly unheard of for our team...but we are in a different league this year. Which makes me ponder...is it better to win three in a little lesser league or lose three...Possibly win one in a harder league? I vote for the winning...but I think if all the games are easy I will be swinging the other way. But for right now it is nice, we have a lot of new people on our team and it is nice to be eased into it!

Finally I thought I would put some pictures up...something I want to do more of (after I just filled 2 albums last weekend). The first two are of Hunter and the kitties at nana and papa's house and another is of all of us at Josh's cousin's wedding (great picture if Hunter was looking).

Enjoy!

Happy Labor Day!!

Can you believe the summer is coming to a close?? I can not! Granted now that I am no longer in school and I do not have school age children, the "going back to school" hype is somewhat lost on me...I still have to go to work on Tuesday...just as I have all summer long. Not that I am bitter, and frankly I am glad I don't have to do that change of gears anymore. But one thing this weekend does do is remind me of all the great memories I have of school...grade school, junior high, high school and college. It reminds me off all the great friends I have, the ones I had and the ones I have lost contact with. It reminds me of the apprehension of a new school, the reality that I have many years left, or that this is the last year; all the school functions, sports activities and championships, parties, homework and projects...but mostly it reminds me that I am glad I stuck it out and got my engineering degree and that I chose to go to Platteville and meet my wonderful husband.

It is weird to think at 17 I was making a decision, not only on a school, but a career and a location where I will meet some of the most important people in my life. Was I lucky or smart...I like to think smart...but I am pretty sure that luck had a big role in that!

This morning as I was driving in to work on the beltline, I noticed a car with a mom, dad and a girl. In the back seat the girl had half the seat covered with blankets, pillows and luggage...then I noticed her grab a Kleenex from behind her and wipe her eyes...it made me wonder...was she off to school? Did she have to say good bye to a first love? Maybe some close friends? We have all been there and I just wanted to tell her that it would all work out and she was embarking on the best time of her life...if she lets it be. She will meet new friends, have new experiences and hopefully end up with an education which will help her to a productive future! Who knows maybe she will even meet the love of her life, like I did.

So in closing, I guess I just wanted to remind you to think of all those great Labor Days that you had...even if you didn't like to go back to school!

Have a good one!

Math Fun

I thought everyone could use a little math humor to brighten their Thursday!! I wish I would have had the guts to answer some questions like this in college!

Have a good Labor Day! Try not to Labor too much!

Common Sense

If there is one thing as a parent I want to instill in my kids, it is common sense (besides being a successful, self confidant, independent adult)! And this following reminded me of how common sense is one thing that many young adults don't have. It could be what leads to the entitlement and instant gratification part of the next generation but that is to discuss for a different day. For now, just enjoy one of my many forwarded emails!

Thought y'all should read about the passing of a Dear Friend.

Today we mourn the passing of a beloved old friend, Common Sense, who has been with us for many years. No one knows for sure how old he was since his birth records were long ago lost in bureaucratic red tape.

He will be remembered as having cultivated such valuable lessons as knowing when to come in out of the rain, why the early bird gets the worm, life isn't always fair, and maybe it was my fault.

Common Sense lived by simple, sound financial policies (don't spend more than you earn) and reliable parenting strategies (adults, not children, are in charge).

His health began to deteriorate rapidly when well intentioned but overbearing regulations were set in place. Reports of a six-year- old boy charged with sexual harassment for kissing a classmate; teens suspended from school for using mouthwash after lunch; and a teacher fired for reprimanding an unruly student, only worsened his condition.

Common Sense lost ground when parents attacked teachers for doing the job they themselves failed to do in disciplining their unruly children.

It declined even further when schools were required to get parental consent to administer sun lotion or a Band Aid to a student but could not inform the parents when a student became pregnant and wanted to have an abortion.

Common Sense lost the will to live as the Ten Commandments became contraband, churches became businesses, and criminals received better treatment than their victims.

Common Sense took a beating when you couldn't defend yourself from a burglar in your own home and the burglar can sue you for assault.

Common Sense finally gave up the will to live after a woman failed to realize that a steaming cup of coffee was hot. She spilled a little in her lap, and was promptly awarded a huge settlement.

Common Sense was preceded in death by his parents, Truth and Trust; his wife, Discretion; his daughter, Responsibility; and his son, Reason.

He is survived by three stepbrothers; I Know My Rights, Someone Else Is To Blame, and I'm A Victim. Not many attended his funeral because so few realized he was gone.

If you still remember him, pass this on. If not, join the majority and do nothing.

Quick update

Just thought I would give everyone a quick update on our lives...busy, busy, busy!!! I think that just about covers it :) Just kidding. Since my last post I have been to two wedding showers, a dinner cruise, to the dells swimming, home to Manitowoc and up to Oconto Falls for work. First the showers: I went to a bridal shower for my cousin's fiance on Lake Monona two weekends ago. Her aunt and uncle live on the lake and it was BEAUTIFUL!! It is so strange to think of living on a lake right in Madison. I can't even imagine what it is like to wake up to that every day!

That night Josh and I went on a dinner cruise for work on the "other big lake" in Madison...I can't keep them straight! It was with everyone from work and it was a lot of fun (see picture). I would definitely recommend it.

Last weekend we were in Manitowoc for my cousin's "couple wedding shower". Which ends up being a big party. It was a lot of fun and the skit went over well. This years skit featured 'Towoc Bridal' with many local entries singing songs of many genres. There were a lot of kids there and everyone seemed to get a long well. Hunter must have run his little legs off...he napped for more then 4 hours both Saturday and Sunday!

As for bad news...my Ipod broke last week and it has to be sent in...I am lost without it! I like to listen to ESPN radio but I don't like listening to Baseball stuff and that is what is on at this time of year! Well I best be going!

Over and out!

Fun on the Lake

I thought I would post some pictures from our long weekend up at the lake. We had a great, relaxing time. It was hot but we did have some time to get out on the water and enjoy the sunshine! I think Hunter found his new favorite toy...the jetski!

I paid $2.79 for "gas"

Just thought I would let you know that I am becoming accustomed to "green power" in my life outside of work (windmills)...I purchased my first tank of E-85 today. Granted the $2.79 / gallon is better then $3.09 for gas...but rumor has it isn't as good for my gas mileage...so I need to look for it in the $2.35 / gallon range. But we will see. It was kind of nice to buy gas for less the $3 when everyone else was filling up at $3!

This weekend we are headed north and it is around $1.99/gal in the fox valley! Pretty sure we will be stopping! When is the last time you can say you bought gas for less then $2??? We can also get a better gauge on what it does to our gas mileage. So far I am loving driving it! And now I am helping the environment.

It's a TAHOE!!!

Josh and I are the proud new owners of a maroon 2004 Chevy Tahoe! Little did we know we would be buying last night...but what the heck! It's not like gas prices are high :) Josh got his wish to get rid of the Alero and I got my wish of a Tahoe...so really it was a win, win! Next time you are around be sure to stop by and see the new truck! We may even give you a ride!

Swimming as meditation?

I swam this morning...as I do many mornings. I have decided that it is not only good for my physical health but it is also good for my physiological health. I think swimming is a lot like meditation...when else can you exercise with ear plugs and have the time fly by? There are many days that I will be in the pool for 40 minutes and I have thought about absolutely nothing...except count 1, 2, 3, 4, breathe...there are other mornings when I spend much of my time saying the rosary (obviously without the beads). It just really clears my head. Instead of just being exhausted after working out...I actually feel refreshed! (my legs and arms are tired too) So I guess the moral of the story is swimming is a really good workout...now if I could figure out how to get rid of the chlorine smell :)

We are off to a wedding this weekend. Should be a good time...provided everyone behaves...you know how family weddings can be! I could spend a lot of time venting right now about how a wedding is a happy occasion and the focus should be on the bride and groom are starting their life...but I think it would be wise not to! Hopefully I can get some pictures up of it after we get back!

Over and Out!

Happy 4th!!

Wow I can't believe it is here already but this weekend marks the beginning of the 4th of July celebrations. I think we say it every year, but it just seems like summer is flying by. I think of it differently now that I am in the working world and no longer in school. I remember when I was in school, the 4th always meant that summer was almost 1/2 over but there was still time to get a lot done...or make some money before classes start again! It is amazing how for so much of your life you live by school years and you live for summer, but then that all changes so abruptly when you start working. Now summer isn't the exciting time you look forward to when you are a kid, it is now a time when you try to find some time for yourself because your weekends are jammed packed with weddings, picnics, reunions, vacations and other "fun summer" events! Which for that reason is why Josh and I are staying home this weekend. It does feel kind of strange to not have plans for this "oh so important" travel weekend, but then on the other hand it will be nice to hang out at home and enjoy the peace and quiet! I thought I would post some pictures to remind us of fun summer activities...and one to show you how much Hunter looks like Josh! Well I hope if you are traveling for the holiday, your travels are safe and your time is enjoyable!

Glimmer of Hope

Well the decision was made...Josh did really well. We have picked the black dress. I think I am the most comfortable in it too. But to top things off was the AWESOME pair of shoes I found to go with the dress! I will definitely take a picture of the shoes...even if you don't get to see the full package! Now I just need to find some funky jewelry and I will be good as gold.

On another note, I would like to share a picture of my wonderful husband and his musky. It is first and he (and I) are very proud! Way to go Josh!

Resolution

Well after thinking about it last night and while I swam this morning (swimming laps is great meditation and thinking time) I have decided to go and buy the dress at Boston Store too, try them both on for Josh and let him make the decision. Poor guy, I know he didn't sign up for this but at least he can have something to compare them with....I will keep you posted on the big decision.

Dress Shopping...what fun

Well tonight was the dreaded night of all nights...dress shopping. I have two weddings coming up and I needed something to wear. Unfortunately, even though Hunter is totally worth it, I have a lot more curves, bumps, jiggly and dangling things then I used to have...so trying on dresses in a very bright, dully painted, heavily mirrored room...isn't all that appealing. (Not to mention the help I brought along ditched me :) ) So as I am standing there and I have already tried on close to 10 dresses in sizes that are much bigger then I like, I have resorted to skirts and pants...so now the big decision...do I go with the shirt and skirt I think I like...but can't really tell if it makes me look pregnant...one look I am REALLY not going for...or do I go home empty handed...something I vowed I wouldn't do. Well I bought it, do I like it? I guess...do I love it? No... But I am to exhausted and depressed after all that to try it on for Josh to get his opinion tonight...and I don't think he should get the brunt of it (he does enough). So maybe I will take it back...I don't know, I will keep you posted. There are times when you really need a girlfriends approval I guess this is one of them.

Moral of the story...dress shopping is no fun...there are a ton of cute dresses out there but finding that hidden gem takes a lot more time then I have available...I guess I will do what I usually do when I need a little pick me up...I will go look at my beautiful little boy sleeping and realize that my bigger hips, stretched marked tummy and big boobs are all worth it! (that and email Diana and vent!)

Over, out and exhausted!

Spelling Important?? I don't think so...

For those of you that don't know me well, you would never guess that I am not good at spelling...but I am not. Where that originates from I don't know, but if you take a look at my dad's spelling I am beginning to think it might be genetic! Then there is the "computer generation" which enables us to have "spell checker" to check all of our work, therefore may hinder our actual spelling capability (although I can fool the best spell checker)...this would be the same thing as the "calculator generation" which would be why I can't add, subtract, multiply or divide in my head! Laziness can also play into it...due to lack of proof reading (which I am sure you have witnessed on this blog). Where am I going with this you ask??? Well I have just received the following:

fi yuo cna raed tihs, yuo hvae a sgtrane mnid too

Cna yuo raed tihs?

i cdnuolt blveiee taht I cluod aulaclty uesdnatnrd waht I was rdanieg.
The phaonmneal pweor of the hmuan mnid, aoccdrnig to a rscheearch at Cmabrigde Uinervtisy, it dseno't mtaetr in waht oerdr the ltteres in a wrod are, the olny iproamtnt tihng is taht the frsit and lsat ltteer be in the rghit pclae. The rset can be a taotl mses and you can sitll raed it whotuit a pboerlm. Tihs is bcuseae the huamn mnid deos not raed ervey lteter by istlef, but the wrod as a wlohe. Azanmig huh? yaeh and I awlyas tghuhot slpeling was ipmorantt! if you can raed tihs forwrad it
.

I can read this, I don't know about you...but I think it proves that I don't need to know how to spell anyway! All I need to know is the beginning ending letters of the words (still a little tricky in the English language)...so all the people who complain about my spelling and all the little and big kids that get picked on for their spelling...Here's to you! While you have been wasting your time learning how to spell...we have been outside having fun!

P.S. Don't run "spell checker" on this!

Sad News...and NIMBY's at work

I am sad to say that Jackie, the lady in my last post, passed away last Friday. My heart aches for her family and the challenges that they have in front of them.

On another note, I would just like to voice my frustration in the views of people and power. I am not talking political or financial power, I am talking about actual power. Big power, power that flows through lines in the air and underground, dangerous, high voltage power. Now I happen to be an electrical engineer (very happy to say a professional one at that), and I work in power and utilities. I enjoy and like to think I understand what I am doing, although I know there is much more to learn! Right now ATC (American Transmission Company) is trying to build a 345 kV line through Dane county, that is basically the highest voltage line that WI current has. You typically see them around power plants and heading to large substations. They are big and they are ugly (to the commoner, to a utility engineer they are a thing of beauty)...but they are VERY necessary, especially in a state like WI where there is MINIMAL transmission. Anyway, my point isn't to educate you on the need...my point is that every person of any power (Mayor Dave, township heads...) try to tell you this is not needed, put it somewhere else, or don't build it at all. Now how do these people get off saying whether or not it is needed...do you as a Doctor to show you every number in your lab results to prove something? No I didn't think so, you trust them, or you go to another doctor and between the two of them you come to some decision you trust. You don't study your lab results on your own.

Well the engineers that are saying that this line is needed have gone through intense studies to verify that it is needed, and have gone through alternatives to the line option also. Not only did they do their own exhaustive study, they have had outsiders come in and do another study to verify the results. These engineers are licensed or supervised by licensed professional engineers. Now I understand that nobody really wants this in their backyard, and they have every right to voice that opinion, but they don't have the means nor the expertise to say that it isn't needed! Leave that to the professionals in the area of work to determine that!! It is very frustrating and I understand that this is a very confusing topic and that is there are many state and federal agencies to insure that the right decision is being made about where these lines go. So if you want to make a statement in the paper or at an open house, make one on why you don't want them, not you sudo analysis on something you don't know anything about!

Prayers Needed Again...

Well it seemed to work the last time so I thought I would try again...A lady I used to babysit for and she and her family have many connections to my sister-in-law Tara's family, had a brain aneurysm earlier this week. She is in the hospital right now in Green Bay. She had surgery on Tuesday and had been doing pretty good, and the family was given the news that she had a very good chance of making close to a full recovery. But last night her blood pressure spiked and things aren't looking so good again. She and her husband have 3 kids (teens - preteens). I went to South Carolina with them to babysit on Vacation when I was in highschool. They are very nice people, and I can't imagine what they are going through. Once again if you have a few extra prayers send them their way. It is very surreal how fast life can change. It is times like this that I realize I don't need to spend so much time worrying about the little things!

Why We Love Kids

These are great! I thought I would share. Hope it is as sunny by you today as it is here!! It is wonderful!!

WHY WE LOVE KIDS!

1. NUDITY

I was driving with my three young children one warm summer evening when a woman in the convertible ahead of us stood up and waved. She was stark naked! As I was reeling from the shock, I heard my 5-year-old shout from the back seat, "Mom! That lady isn't wearing a seat belt!"

2. HONESTY

My son Zachary, 4, came screaming out of the bathroom to tell me he'd dropped his toothbrush in the toilet. So I fished it out and threw it in the garbage. Zachary stood there thinking for a moment, then ran to my bathroom and came out with my toothbrush. He held it up and said with a charming little smile, "We better throw this one out too then, cause it fell in the toilet a few days ago."

3. OPINIONS

On the first day of school, a first-grader handed his teacher a note from his mother. The note read,"The opinions expressed by this child are not necessarily those of his parents."

4. KETCHUP

A woman was trying hard to get the ketchup out of the jar. During her struggle the phone rang so she asked her 4-year-old daughter to answer the phone. "It's the minister, Mommy," the child said. Then she added, Mommy can't come to the phone to talk to you right now. She's hitting the bottle."

5. MORE NUDITY

A little boy got lost at the YMCA and found himself in the women's locker room. When he was spotted, the room burst into shrieks, with ladies grabbing towels and running for cover. The little boy watched in amazement and then asked, "What's the matter, haven't you ever seen a little boy before?"

6. POLICE #

1 While taking a routine vandalism report at an elementary school, I was interrupted by a little girl about 6 years old. Looking up and down at my uniform, she asked, "Are you a cop?"" Yes," I answered and continued writing the report."My mother said if I ever needed help I should ask the police. Is that right?""Yes, that's right," I told her."Well, then," she said as she extended her foot toward me, "would you please tie my shoe?"

7. POLICE # 2

It was the end of the day when I parked my police van in front of the station. As I gathered my equipment, my K-9 partner, Jake, was barking, and I saw a little boy staring in at me "Is that a dog you got back there?" he asked. "It sure is," I replied. Puzzled, the boy looked at me and then towards the back of the van. Finally he said, "What'd he do?"

8. ELDERLY

While working for an organization that delivers lunches to elderly shut-ins, I used to take my 4-year-old daughter on my afternoon rounds. She was unfailingly intrigued by the various appliances of old age, particularly the canes, walkers and wheelchairs. One day I found her staring at a pair of false teeth soaking in a glass. As I braced myself for the inevitable barrage of questions, she merely turned and whispered, "The tooth fairy will never believe this!"

9. DRESS-UP

A little girl was watching her parents dress for a party. When she saw her dad donning his tuxedo, she warned, "Daddy, you shouldn't wear that suit.""And why not, darling?" "You know that it always gives you a headache the next morning."

10. DEATH

While walking along the sidewalk in front of his church, our minister heard the intoning of a prayer that nearly made his collar wilt. Apparently, his 5-year-old son and his playmates had found a dead robin. Feeling that proper burial should be performed, they had secured a small box and cotton batting, then dug a hole and made ready for the disposal of the deceased. The minister's son was chosen to say the appropriate prayers and with sonorous dignity intoned his version of what he thought his father always said: "Glory be unto the Faaaather, and unto the Sonnn, and into the hole he gooooes."

11. SCHOOL

A little girl had just finished her first week of school. "I'm just wasting my time," she said to her mother. "I can't read, I can't write and they won't let me talk!"

12. BIBLE

A little boy opened the big family bible. He was fascinated as he fingered through the old pages. Suddenly, something fell out of the Bible. He picked up the object and looked at it. What he saw was an old leaf that had been pressed in between the pages "Mama, look what I found," the boy called out."What have you got there, dear?" With astonishment in the young boy's voice, he answered, "I think it's Adam's underwear."------

Blue Sky!!!

I just saw a sliver of blue sky!!! I haven't seen that in over 5 days!!! Yeah...even though it is short lived as the big ugly grey clouds move in...I did see it! I guess there are some advantages to the big windows in my office :)

It didn't help last night as I froze my butt off at volleyball with a few sprinkles of rain to top off the night...but I thought I would bless my brother's with my presence and hung out at the bar with them...ok I was getting a ride home from them. But mom would be so proud :-)

Finally done...

Well we are done with the painting!!! Yeah!!! the only walls left to paint in our house are in the spare bedroom...and until there is another little Andrew on the way...not for a while for those of you wondering...there won't be anymore painting done! Luckily we like the colors, and it turned out good...with A LOT of work. We shipped Hunter off for the night on Friday so we could finish up. I already had 2+ coats of red on the 2 living room walls (remember I said 2 walls), which was a gallon of paint, plus some primer. I went to Sherwin Williams on Friday rather disgusted that I put an entire gallon of paint on two walls and it still looked streaky...it didn't look good to me and certainly not to my perfectionist husband...but who can blame him we do have to look at it every day. So...the Sherwin Williams guy apologized and said they should have told me that it was going to take FIVE coats...plus primer...to paint dark red...so he gave me a discount...still way to expensive for paint!! So away I went...task for the night, Josh paints the living room, I tear apart the kitchen, scrub the semigloss of the walls previously painted and paint the remainder of the kitchen...time started...6ish...time complete...1:30AM!!! But does it look good? Yes. Is my house still a mess? Yes! I will try to get some pictures when I have everything fully back together. At least I don't have to paint anymore for a long, long time!

I also went to a bachelorette party this weekend. Lots of fun per the occasion. We were in some VERY small towns with very nice people. I didn't really know anyone besides the bride but I think a good time was had by all, including me. (Especially because I felt fine today)!!! Yeah!!!

Today is also Mother's Day...which comes in a close third behind my birthday and Christmas :) My wonderful husband, son and kitty got me a mother's bracelet with two strands...one says Hunter and the other is for room to grow!! It is very pretty and I love looking at it!!

Other then that not much new. I have a feeling tomorrow might be a rough day for my little guy. He had some fairly late nights and a lot of freedom this weekend which he was enjoying greatly. But that is the fun of going to grandma and grandpa's...Unfortunately at his age he doesn't realize that he has to be whipped back into shape tomorrow at the sitters :{ Here's hoping he does well...

One final note...anyone looking to buy a lovely home in Deerfield WI...there is one listed on www.fsbomadison.com at 101 S Main Street...great old Victorian with BEAUTIFUL woodwork!!! I have an in with the family and can hook you up if interested :)

Well I best be getting to bed for a little wind down time. I have had a long weekend and I have to work a full week...something I don't do a whole lot of these days it seems :)

Life in the 1500's

Here are some interesting things you probably didn't know...

The next time you are washing your hands and complain because the water temperature isn't just how you like it, think about how things used to be. Here are some facts about the1500s: Most people got married in June because they took their yearly bath in May, and still smelled pretty good by June. However, they were starting to smell, so brides carried a bouquet of flowers to hide the body odor. Hence the custom today of carrying a bouquet when getting married.

Baths consisted of a big tub filled with hot water. The man of the house had the privilege of the nice clean water, then all the other sons and men, then the women and finally the children. Last of all the babies. By then the water was so dirty you could actually lose someone in it. Hence the saying, Don't throw the baby out with the Bath water

Houses had thatched roofs-thick straw-piled high, with no wood underneath. It was the only place for animals to get warm, so all the cats and other small animals (mice, bugs) lived in the roof. When it rained it became slippery and sometimes the animals would slip and fall off the roof. Hence the saying . It's raining cats and dogs.

There was nothing to stop things from falling into the house. This posed a real problem in the bedroom where bugs and other droppings could mess up your nice clean bed. Hence, a bed with big posts and a sheet hung over the top afforded some protection. That's how canopy beds came into existence.

The floor was dirt. Only the wealthy had something other than dirt. Hence the saying, Dirt poor. The wealthy had slate floors that would get slippery in the winter when wet, so they spread thresh (straw) on floor to help keep their footing. As the winter wore on, they added more thresh until, when you opened the door, it would all start slipping outside. A piece of wood was placed in the entranceway. Hence the saying a thresh hold.

In those old days, they cooked in the kitchen with a big kettle that always hung over the fire. Every day they lit the fire and added things to the pot. They ate mostly vegetables and! did not get much meat. They would eat the stew for dinner, leaving leftovers in the pot to get cold overnight and then start over the next day. Sometimes stew had food in it that had been there for quite a while. Hence the rhyme, Peas porridge hot, peas porridge cold, peas porridge in the pot nine days old..

Sometimes they could obtain pork, which made them feel quite special. When visitors came over, they would hang up their bacon to show off. It was a sign of wealth that a man could, bring home the bacon. They would cut off a little to share with guests and would all sit around and chew the fat..

Those with money had plates made of pewter. Food with high acid content caused some of the lead to leach onto the food, causing lead poisoning death. This happened most often with tomatoes, so for the next 400 years or so, tomatoes were considered poisonous.

Bread was divided according to status. Workers got the burnt bottom of the loaf, the family got the middle, and guests got the top, or the upper crust.

Lead cups were used to drink ale or whisky. The combination would sometimes knock the imbibers out for a couple of days. Someone walking along the road would take them for dead and prepare them for burial. They were laid out on the kitchen table for a couple of days and the family would gather around and eat and drink and wait and see if they would wake up. Hence the custom of holding a wake.

England is old and small and the local folks started running out of places to bury people. So they would dig up coffins and would take the bones to a bone-house, and reuse the grave. When reopening these coffins, 1 out of 25 coffins were found to have scratch marks on the inside and they realized they had been burying people alive. So they would tie a string on the wrist of the corpse, lead it through the coffin and up through the ground and tie it to a bell. Someone would have to sit out in the graveyard all night (the graveyard shift) to listen for the bell; thus, someone could be, saved by the bell or was considered a ....dead ringer..

Where have the weeks gone?

Well where have I been...you ask? I have had a couple weeks of complete chaos at both work and home which have left me exhausted!! There isn't one thing in particular that has made the weeks crazy but everything adds up I guess! There are some days that I just wish I could have 2 more hours...but the crazy thing in life is if you had 2 more hours, you would want 3 more. Same things with hands...if I had a third (which would have been nice many times in the last couple of weeks) I would want a fourth.

It seems that with each generation we want more...we want to own more, we want to do more, we want to work more, we want to play more...I hope for my kids that all of the "wanting" doesn't continue and they can be happy with what they have! It seems that there is always pressure to advance...why can't we just be happy with a 3 bedroom house, or 2 normal cars, or clothes from Shopko? I am.

In the day of "instant stimulation" we don't have time to just relax! My goal for this year...late resolution...is to stop running, and slow down. I have found with a little one, the more I try to cram into a day/weekend, the more tired, and stressed I am. And really who is this benefiting...me? Well I have already covered that...Hunter? Let's see he usually gets strapped into a stroller or car seat for the majority of the "adventure"...pretty sure that isn't always his first option for fun.

Oh well I guess I am just venting because I am tired and cranky. It also goes to show what it is like in the life of a full time working mom...I love my son, I love my husband, and I love my job...but there aren't enough hours to in the day to do everything! And I need to come to some sort of grips with that! And I think the best way to do that is to start saying no to some things...

A quick update on what has been going on in my world...I am about 1/2 way done with the painting...it looks good so far and Josh and I are finishing tomorrow night. Hunter has been hilarious, yet trying lately. He wants to entertain and get everyone's attention. But he also is having some napping issues, so we have seen our first little bout of melt downs. He and I went to the library a couple of weeks ago to get books and we got a Clifford one...which has quickly become his favorite! I am amazed everyday how much he absorbs...within a month he is pointing out animals, characters, and body parts. His talking is getting better and occasionally we hear a word or two. He sure has a lot to say, but we don't know quite what! :)

Well that's it for now...hopefully it won't be another 2 weeks before I am on!

It's a Boy!!

I am an aunt once again!! This time for a little red head!! We knew there had to be one sooner or later...Rob and Steph are now the proud parents of Sawyer Stephen Schipper. Weighing in at 8 lbs 6 oz, 19.5 inches long. Mom and baby are doing well...I am assuming daddy is too!

I just had to pass the word on. Sorry it has been so long since the last entry...hopefully this week I can get on and tell about the new stories of my life...like Hunter's latest drink of choice and a surprise trip to PA.

National Champs...I was there!!!

The Badger men's (and women's) won the National Championship in Hockey!!! But more importantly, I was there to see the men's...much to my husband's liking...he didn't think I was worthy of watching the game. So here is how it all started...Thursday night Josh's aunt and uncle came over to watch the 1st of the final four games, and obviously the Badgers won...which then meant that they were going to play in the national championship game in Milwaukee on Saturday!!! Unfortunately this was the weekend that Josh was going to be in Stevens Point for the trivia contest...But after the game I went on line to look for tickets...they were pricey and I was thinking, no I probably don't need to go...but I thought I would email Josh's sister anyway and just see if she was still interested...she was in bed, so she missed my email and my call until the morning. So the next morning I went in to work...but wasn't feeling very well, so I stayed about an hour and came home with the flu...in the mean time, Mandy called and said that she would like to go to the game and go ahead and buy the tickets...Unfortunately they were $60 more then they were 12 hours prior...and I had developed the flu in the time frame...but sticking to my historical occurrences of the flu...I was hoping that I would feel better in a day, and I knew if I would throw up I would definitely feel better! So tickets bought, sitter lined up, and still feeling pretty crappy...I laid around all day and then went to pick up Hunter at about 3:30...learned that 3 kids were out with the flu...then promptly came home and threw up everything I had eaten that day (not much), BUT I was feeling MUCH better! I was in bed early that night, to rest up for the big game. Saturday morning Hunter spent some time at a craft fair and playing outside and then Mandy and I were off to Milwaukee!! We were there early, parked, walked around, go something to eat and went to the game. It was great, the atmosphere was great...almost all red, and every time the BC fans would start to cheer they were immediately over powered by the Badger fans! Our seats were 3 rows from the top, but they were center ice, so we could see everything great! I was such a great experience, I am glad I went. I may not be the biggest Hockey fan but I am a big sports fan and I can appreciate how big of a game that was and how rarely an opportunity like that comes along. All in all, one of my best sports memories! (minus the BC guy that told me to sit down in the 3rd period...while it was tied) I may even have to watch miracle this weekend to commemorate the win! I attached a few pictures from the night, but nothing can beat the feeling of being there!

Warm Weather Please?

Well it is sunny and LOOKS nice out...but still in the 40's. I was just wishing for once the weathermen were correct. This is at least the 3rd day in the last week where the weathermen had said it would be in 60's and no dice! Oh well at least the sun is shining...for those of us stuck inside during the day...that is all that matters!

LSU couldn't pull it out this past weekend...Actually I don't even think they showed up to play. It was fairly reminiscent of watching the Badgers at the end of the season. Which in turn meant that I didn't win the big money for the brackets. I did win 2nd in one of them which means I won enough money to cover my entry fees. Oh well I guess there is always next year!

Hunter and I spent the past weekend in Manitowoc visiting. It was an enjoyable weekend, but cold of course. Hunter still got to get outside with Papa, and ride on the tractor and help rake. He also got to go to the library to see all of Nana's work friends and play in the Youth department. For those of you in Manitowoc...that youth department is pretty nice...and we even checked out some legos to bring home and play with...after Hunter terrorized some bigger kids playing at the lego table.

I also got the chance to catch up with some old friends from high school. It has been a long time since we have seen eachother and it was nice to catch up and let the past in the past. This in turn meant that Hunter got to meet some more new friends...he sure does enjoy playing with new friends. I could tell that he missed his friends from daycare when he wanted Kendra (Sarah and Travis's 3 year old) to hold his hand and lead him around. Another little girl at daycare, Lauren, always leads Hunter around by the hand to play.

This weekend Josh is off to the "World's Largest Trivia Contest" in Stevens Point. So Hunter and I are home to play, relax and probably clean. Maybe we will have an outing if it is nice and get some pictures up for next week! It just amazes me how fast the weeks fly by! I think it has gotten even faster with Hunter! He will be 16 months on Friday and it seems like I just had his birthday! Now with summer coming I am sure that it won't slow down. I was just looking at August and September and they are almost booked. Oh well at least we have Family and Friends to travel and see. Although I am not sure this is keeping me young :)

Hunter Hanging out with Auntie Mandy

More pictures of Hunter hanging out with his aunts for the week! Today he is with nana Julie. I think he is enjoying the attention all week...but I think he misses the kids at daycare too. By the time I have him tomorrow he is going to be pretty bored with me!

Words of wisdom: when spending 14 of 24 hours in a car, get a book on CD! It really makes the time fly!

New Computer

We finally got our new computer. I started setting it up Saturday night. It is much more work to replace a computer then buying your first one. I now have the old computer (which I must say was disgusting after sitting under our desk for 3 years) set up on the bar, and the new one on the desk. I don't have the printer set up yet, but I have the programs loaded and my Itunes moved...which took a long time! I think the new one is going to be great...I just need to spend some time with it...maybe next week!

This week we don't have a sitter (she is on vacation) so we have family watching Hunter most of the week and I have off on Friday. Today he is with my sister-in-law, who also has her 3 kids home. She sent me some pictures of the boys training Hunter to be Jedi...I had to share. His daddy is so proud (see the blog's first entry). As you can see from the picture...I guess cow needs a little lesson in becoming a jedi too! (Cow serves as a bit of courage when we aren't around).

Update on Steph's cousin...she is doing good. She is improving daily. She is really weak and it sounds like a little depressed about not being able to see the baby. But hopefully soon she will be able to enjoy her little guy!

Almost forgot...I still have one team alive in the tournament! GO LSU!!! If they win I may be in the money!!!

That's it for now!
